Independently designed and built by Chinese enterprises, the Shanghai-Suzhou-Nantong Yangtze River Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge with steel-truss girders and a main span of 1,092 meters. In the construction of the bridge, 65 patents were granted, 14 new construction methods were developed, and five world firsts were achieved. First, it is the world’s first rail-cum-road bridge with a main span of more than 1,000 meters. Second, it is the world’s first bridge using steel wires with a tensile strength of 1,800 MPa. Third, it is the world’s first bridge using a complete set of equipment to erect an 1,800-ton steel girder. Fourth, it is the world’s first bridge to achieve precise positioning of 15,000 tons of giant caissons. Fifth, it is the world’s first bridge to conduct in-situ impact test for the development of pier anti-collision technology. An in-situ impact test was organized for the first time in the world and realized an early warning of collision within a range of three kilometers, effectively ensuring the safety of the bridge and ships.
