More than 2,000 Days & Nights’ Efforts Contributed to the Completion of the First Railway in Sri Lanka for Almost 100 Years

April 8th, 2019, Matara-Beliatta Railway Extension (Phase I) in Southern Sri Lanka was opened to traffic, which was constructed by China Railway No.5 Engineering Group Co., Ltd and China Railway Electrification Engineering Group Co., Ltd, two subsidiaries of CREC. Since the last railway built by British in 1928, there has been no newly built railway in the country. The operation realized Sri Lankan people’s centurial dream for the modernized railway.

The Project, started to be built in 2013, is the first modernized single-track and broad-gauge railway for diesel locomotive, with the designed speed of 120 km/h and a total length of 26.75 km, since the independence of Sri Lanka in 1948.

Overcoming lots of unfavorable factors as flood disasters in rain season, geological defects, and etc., the builders from CREC accomplished many construction tasks, including culverts, large- and medium-sized bridges, tunnels, subgrade earthwork, manual track-laying of the whole line, stations and passenger stop points.

The well-trained technical or managerial talents and construction workers as well as advanced technical standards for the design and construction of railway will be the precious treasures and impetus for the Nation and the people, and will also make Sri Lanka to become a much more brilliant pearl along the Belt & Road.
