Indonesia marked a milestone in the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway (HSR) project with the breakthrough of Walini tunnel constructed by CREC on May 14th, 2019. The Walini tunnel is the first completed tunnel in the Jakarta-Bandung HSR. It marks a siginificant progress and lays a solid foundation for accelerating the construction of the HSR.

ZHANG Wei, President of the Jakarta-Bandung HSR Project Department, said that the 608-meter Valini tunnel near the Valini station is complex in geology. It passes through volcanic deposits with broken rock mass and poor self-stability. The surrounding low-strength mud-stones are weathered seriously with the nature of degradation in water. With the unremitting efforts, builders of China and Indonesia have overcome many difficulties, and finally completed the excavation of the tunnel.

Soemarno, Minister of State-owned Enterprises of Indonesia, conveyed her greatest gratitude to all Indonesian and Chinese builders involved in tunnel construction. “The completion of the Valini tunnel is a milestone in the construction of the Jakarta-Bandung HSR and will provide impetus for the follow-up construction. The HSR will alleviate the traffic pressure of commuting between Jakarta and Bandung, two densely populated cities, promoting the economic development of Indonesia and benefiting many Indonesian people,” she said.

XIAO Qian, Chinese ambassador to Indonesia, said that the Jakarta-Bandung HSR project was confirmed and promoted by the leaders of China and Indonesia. It is not only the first project for CHSR to go globally in terms of the whole system, elements and production chain, but also a landmark project of the “Belt and Road” Initiative. With the joint efforts of China and Indonesia, the construction of the project has been making new progresses. It is hoped that the HSR will be opened to traffic soon and bring benefits to the Indonesian people.

The 142-km-long Jakarta-Bandung HSR has a maximum designed speed of 350 km/h. The HSR train enables people to travel in about 40 minutes between Jakarta and Bandung, while regular trains or cars take up to 3 hours. Effectively alleviating the traffic pressure between Jakarta and Bandung as well as optimizing the local investment environment, the project will promote the development of economy, commerce and tourism industry along the line, and accelerate the formation of economic corridor of HSR.
