The newly-built Qinghe Station of the Beijing-Zhangjiakou High-Speed Railway was awarded China Steel Structure Gold Award on June 20. The award is the highest honor for steel structure engineering in China presented by China Construction Metal Structure Association supervised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, and is presented to no more than three projects every year.

Beijing-Zhangjiakou High-Speed Railway

Qinghe Station, built by China Railway Construction Engineering Group, is the largest station along the Beijing-Zhangjiakou High-Speed Railway. A total of 31,000 tons of steel was used for construction. The station hall, the overhead drop-off platform and the rain shed are made from steel. The structure spans a maximum of 84.5 meters and the highest overhang is 20.5 meters. Inspired by the idea of inclusiveness, the design employs Chinese traditional architectural features including curved roof supported by lintels unique to ancient buildings in Beijing.

An auxiliary transportation project for Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games, Qinghe Station integrates Olympic elements and local features. The spacious structure uses no columns inside and supports a steel-made roof weighing 5,000 tons with eight pairs of A-shape and Y-shape pillars built from 24 oval steel posts. The project team developed a new processing technique, reducing weld joints and welding residual stress and enhancing machining precision. (By Qin Zhen)
