The Silk Road Economic Belt is the overland interconnecting infrastructure corridors. Essentially, the "belt" includes countries situated on the original Silk Road through Central Asia, West Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Apart from this zone, which is largely analogous to the historical Silk Road, another area included in the extension of this "belt" is South Asia and Southeast Asia.

The 21st-century Maritime Silk Road is the sea route corridors. It is a complementary initiative aimed at investing and fostering collaboration in Southeast Asia, Oceania, and North Africa, through several contiguous bodies of water: the South China Sea, the South Pacific Ocean, and the wider Indian Ocean area.

With the goal of building world-class multinational enterprise, CREC actively take parts in the international cooperation. Till now, there are 288 overseas offices and subsidiaries distribute in 83 countries and regions in the world. Presently, the company is undertaking 365 overseas projects, with 9144 employees engage in the overseas business. In recent years, seizing the historical opportunity of the Belt and Road Initiative, the Company gives full play to the comprehensive advantages of state-owned enterprise and professionality of infrastructure construction, and actively involves in the great cause of BRI which benefits the en-route countries. Right now, CREC has become the main force of the Belt and Road construction. From 2015 to 2017, the accumulated newly signed contract value for overseas business was 40.11 billion USD, of which 25.23 billion USD were signed with the en-route countries, accounting for 63% of the total value.

So Far, CREC has already carried out business in 33 countries and regions along the “Belt and Road”. 165 overseas projects, with a total value of 19.6 billion USD, are under construction. Many major projects with the involvement of CREC have made achievements. The Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway in Ethiopia and the Light Railway Line in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia are in operation. Some Projects are under construction, such as the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway in Indonesia, the Boten-Vientiane railway in Laos, the Padma Bridge and its connecting railway in Bangladesh, the Hanoi light rail in Vietnam, the Southern railway in Malaysia, the Astana light railway in Kazakhstan and so on. Meanwhile, CREC is actively promoting a large number of significant projects, such as the Budapest-Serbia railway in Hungary, the China-Myanmar railway passage, the ML1 railway upgrade project in Pakistan, the southern line of the north-south railway in the Philippines, the Moscow-Kazan high-speed railway in Russia and the Brazil-Peru interoceanic railway. In the “Belt and Road” Forum for International Cooperation in May 2017, the four railway projects mentioned by Chinese President Xi Jinping, are all deeply involved by CREC, they are the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway, the China-Laos railway, the Budapest-Serbia railway and the Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway.
