China-Laos Railway: First Tunnel Longer than 1,000 Meters Drills Through

Nateuy Tunnel, the first over-1000-meter tunnel along the China-Laos railway, has been drilled through in Luang Namtha province, Laos on October 28, 2018.

 

This 1158-meter tunnel, commenced on June 3, 2017, is surrounded by grade IV and V rocks, mainly soft rocks and partially carbon mud-stones.

 

China-Laos railway, with a total length of 414.33 kilometers, is an important component of the “Belt and Road” Initiative. Started from the Sino-Laos border gate Mohan-Boten, it helps to connect Kunming, the capital city of southwestern China's Yunan province, with Vientiane, Laotian capital city. The single track Grade I railway is designed and constructed with Chinese Standards and techniques. The operating speed of train on this route is designed to be 160 kilometers per hour.
