Launch ceremony of the first mechanically refrigerated train operating on the Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway was held in a freight yard in Ethiopia, marking that the railway under the management of China Railway No.2 Engineering Group Co., Ltd., a branch of China Railway Group Limited (CREC), entered the cold chain transportation era.
The Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway has a high demand for cold chain transportation. Its operation has cut the travel time on land between Addis Ababa and Djibouti from one week to a dozen hours.
As the first transnational electric railway in Africa, the Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway extends 752.7 kilometers and was constructed and managed by China Railway No.2 Engineering Group Co., Ltd. and China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation. It officially began commercial operation on January 1, 2018, and its operation was overseen by a railway joint venture formed by Chinese enterprises and their partners in Ethiopia and Djibouti.
