New progress was recently made in the China-aided irrigation system renovation project undertaken by China Railway No.5 Engineering Group Co., Ltd. in Kyrgyzstan. Water has been drawn into the No.3 irrigation zone, construction of the No.2 irrigation zone has been completed, and the No.1 irrigation zone has completed 96 percent of concrete pouring, a major step closer to the completion of the entire renovation project.
The project is part of practical cooperation within the Belt and Road Initiative under the framework of the China-Kyrgyzstan Intergovernmental Mutual Aid Agreement signed on November 2, 2016. It consists of three irrigation zones, with a total length of 87 kilometers. Through building new channels and renovating and expanding existing channels, it will effectively solve local problems such as shortage of drinking water and waste of farmland. When the project is completed, the region will be added with 2,310 hectares of irrigated land. The project will boost the development of farming and animal husbandry along the route, benefiting more than 20,000 local people.
