Recently, the “CREC No. 1207,” a large-diameter earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine (TBM) developed by China Railway Engineering Equipment Group, a subsidiary of China Railway Hi-Tech Industry, successfully completed the first phase of excavation for Lot 1 of the São Paulo Metro Line 2 extension project in Brazil.
With a diameter of 11.66 meters, “CREC No. 1207” is not only the first TBM exported by China Railway Engineering Equipment Group to South America but also the largest-diameter TBM ever put into use on the continent. The Line 2 extension of the São Paulo Metro connects Vila Prudente Station and Penha Station, with a total tunnel length of approximately 6.5 kilometers. During the first phase of construction, the company deployed an international technical service team to ensure smooth progress. The TBM efficiently completed 3.7 kilometers of excavation, achieving a daily record of 28.5 meters, earning high praise from the client.
Once operational, the completed project is expected to accommodate an average of 500,000 passengers per day, significantly relieving ground traffic congestion in eastern São Paulo and promoting environmentally friendly commuting options for local residents.
