West New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea, on May 8 local time — The first 10-kilometer section (Bamus to Noau) of the 40-kilometer Highway and Bridge Design-Build Project in West New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea, constructed by China Railway Construction Engineering Group, successfully passed its warranty-period inspection and was officially handed over to the local government. Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the opening of the section.
Prime Minister Marape highly commended the project’s achievements and praised China Railway Construction Engineering Group for its leading role and significant contribution throughout the construction process. He expressed hope that the company would continue its deep involvement and support to ensure the smooth advancement of subsequent phases.
The project includes the construction of a 40-kilometer, 7-meter-wide asphalt-surfaced highway, one new 30-meter Bailey bridge, and the rehabilitation of seven existing Bailey bridges. The first phase comprised the repair of three bridges, construction of 11 culverts, and the upgrading of 10 kilometers of existing earth roads to a 7-meter-wide roadway, along with the design and construction of supporting facilities.
Throughout construction, China Railway Construction Engineering Group implemented a localization strategy by sourcing materials locally and establishing its own aggregate processing facility. These measures not only reduced costs and improved efficiency but also further integrated the project into the local economy, creating sustainable income opportunities for nearby communities and delivering shared benefits for all stakeholders.
