Recently, China Railway No.8 Engineering Group successfully secured the contract for the Social Housing Project in Seychelles financed under China’s foreign aid program.
Seychelles, an archipelagic nation in the Indian Ocean off the eastern coast of Africa, faces a shortage of social housing, with low-income families often waiting years—or even more than a decade—for housing allocation. The Chinese government has long attached importance to development assistance for Seychelles and has implemented a number of social housing projects in the country. The newly awarded project is located in the Port Glaud and Anse Royale districts on Mahé Island, the country’s main island. Construction works include 17 residential buildings providing a total of 136 housing units, along with supporting infrastructure such as roads, parking areas, utility networks, a wastewater treatment station, perimeter fencing, and facilities bearing China’s foreign-aid identification marks.
Upon completion, the project will help alleviate local housing shortages, improve living conditions for low-income families, further strengthen the longstanding friendship between China and Seychelles, and contribute to broader China-Africa cooperation and development.
