Accra, Ghana — On June 14 (local time), the final 40-meter precast T-girder for the new Tetteh Quashie Interchange Bridge was accurately positioned into place, marking the successful completion of the erection of all 24 40-meter T-girders by China Railway No.5 Engineering Group’s Ghana AT Project. The milestone has laid a solid foundation for subsequent bridge deck paving and roadway construction.
The existing Tetteh Quashie Interchange Bridge occupies a critical transportation corridor linking Ghana’s capital, Accra, with Tema Port and the Legon area. With heavy daily traffic, worsening congestion and declining operational efficiency caused by aging infrastructure and inadequate maintenance, the construction of the new interchange bridge has been highly anticipated by both the Ghanaian government and the public. Once completed and opened to traffic, the new bridge will effectively alleviate regional traffic bottlenecks, stimulate economic activity along the corridor, improve travel conditions for local residents, and generate substantial overall social and economic benefits.
The construction site is located adjacent to a major traffic artery, where high-altitude lifting operations and the precise positioning of long-span girders posed extremely demanding technical requirements. Combined with the highly variable weather conditions during the rainy season, the project faced significant safety management challenges. The project team deployed a complete set of brand-new professional girder erection equipment, scientifically planned traffic diversion measures, maximized the limited construction windows available during the rainy season, refined every stage of the lifting process, and strictly implemented safety and technical briefings, ultimately completing all girder erection works safely and efficiently.
