On August 9 local time, with the closure of the final cofferdam for river diversion, the Phase II diversion works for the regulating dam of the Nenggiri Hydropower Station in Kelantan, Malaysia, undertaken by Shanghai Civil Engineering Co,.Ltd. Of CREC, were completed, providing valuable time for the subsequent construction of the main structures.
The project is a key undertaking under Malaysia’s national energy development strategy. It is located upstream of the Betis River in the Gua Musang area of Kelantan, Malaysia, with a total installed capacity of 300 megawatts. The area experiences high temperatures and heavy rainfall throughout the year and has complex hydrogeological conditions. During the intermittent periods of the rainy season, the project team must complete a series of highly challenging works, including river diversion, construction of temporary cofferdams and embankments, and closure of the main river channel. The construction window is short, safety risks are high, and coordination and organization are particularly challenging.
Upon completion, the project will provide additional clean electricity to Kelantan, effectively improve the supply-demand balance of the regional power grid, promote local economic development, and diversify the region’s energy mix.
