Following heavy overnight rainfall on May 22, an important arterial road connecting Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, and Hetauda was struck by a major emergency early that morning. Multiple landslides and traffic accidents occurred along the affected section. One large truck overturned across the middle of the roadway, while another plunged down the mountainside, causing severe congestion and temporarily cutting off traffic.
At the request of the local government and military authorities in Nepal, the project management team of the Kathmandu–Terai Expressway Project, undertaken by China Railway No.2 Group, promptly mobilized its Chinese management personnel, together with Nepali geotechnical engineers and workers, to rush to the site and participate in emergency rescue and recovery operations.
The six-member emergency response team deployed four pieces of heavy equipment, including excavators, to carry out debris removal, slope safety inspections, and traffic management. After approximately three hours of intensive operations, the road was successfully reopened to traffic.
Following the reopening of the roadway, the emergency team continued clearing unstable material at the base of the hazardous slope. After an additional two hours of work, approximately 5,000 cubic meters of landslide debris had been removed, effectively eliminating the primary safety risks at the site.
Traffic conditions in the affected area are now gradually returning to normal.
